Bike from the Dead Sea to the Red Sea - Mountain biking holiday in Jordan - A night with Bedouin in Wadi Rum - Free day in Petra - Ride to the lowest point on earth

A thrilling journey, awash with geographical and cultural splendour, as we cross the amazing kingdom of Jordan. On this superb mountain bike ride we encounter many of the ‘must see' locations of this engaging country and also experience its warm and traditional hospitality. From the spiritual site of Mount Nebo we'll witness the stunning views across to the ‘Promised Land', before a descent to the shores of the Dead Sea - an incredible 400 metres below sea level! This is the lowest point on earth and it's a truly unique experience to climb back up to sea level and beyond. On a mix of tarmac and jeep trails we then traverse one of the longest canyons in Jordan, arriving at the high mountain plateau of Dana, where the magnificent panorama includes the Wadi Araba desert, far below. Following a chain of impressive Crusader fortresses, we enjoy exhilarating biking as we descend through the Valley of Moses to Petra, where we have a welcome rest day at the ancient 'rose-red city'. Moving on from Petra, we discover the majestic grandeur of the desert landscapes at Wadi Rum, once home to Lawrence of Arabia. After a night under the stars with our Bedouin hosts, it's a short ride to the Red Sea, where we will be ready for a well-earned drink and swim to end this action-packed week of adventure biking.

SEMI SLICK ADVENTURE - This is a holiday for regular bikers, with reasonable technical skills and good endurance levels. There are long climbs and descents mainly on tarmac and jeep trails, with a total of over 5000 metres of ascent and 7000 metres of descent! The ride from the Dead Sea at 400 metres below sea level up to the Crusader Castle at Karak, at 930 metres, is a unique and memorable challenge. A support vehicle is available for all but one small section of the holiday.

Itinerary / Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Amman Airport. A single timed group transfer from Amman Airport is provided. KE Land Only group package services begin with the overnight at the group hotel in Madaba.

Day 2: Bike to spiritual Mount Nebo, and admire dramatic views over to the Promised Land. The ride finishes at the village of Mukawir where we enjoy a traditional night hosted by a local family. Ride distance: 73 kilometres.

Day 3: Early start and descent to the lowest point on earth, 400 metres below sea level, for a float in the Dead Sea. Then it is a challenging climb back up to sea level and up to the Crusader Castle at Karak. Ride distance: 85 kilometres.

Day 4: Ride across Jordan's eastern plateau before crossing the spectacular Al Hassa canyon to the traditional mountain village of Dana. Ride distance: 90 kilometres.

Day 5: Biking south towards Shobak Castle, another ancient crusader fortress, the route turns to interesting off road riding across the high plateau, before a descent down the Valley of Moses to Wadi Musa close to Petra. Ride distance: 73 kilometres.

Day 6: After 4 days continuous biking a welcome day off in Petra exploring the sights of this wonder city, recently voted for inclusion amongst the world's 'New 7 Wonders'.

Day 7: Short transfer to Rajif before biking along the Spice Route and descending amidst amazing desert landscapes to the Wadi Rum for a night under the stars and a Bedouin feast. Ride distance: 79 kilometres.

Day 8: Morning desert ride between the magnificent sandstone mountains to the Red Sea at Aqaba. Afternoon swimming and relaxing before a transfer back to Madaba. Ride distance: 50 kilometres.

Day 9: KE land only package services end after breakfast. In the early morning there is a single, timed group transfer to Amman airport.
